Job Description: Senior Mainframe Engineer

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Mainframe Engineer with a strong foundation in Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) practices and hands-on experience in core mainframe technologies. The ideal candidate will bring practical expertise in traditional mainframe systems along with exposure to agent-based development and AI-enabled engineering practices, leveraging modern development tools such as VS Code, GitHub, or similar platforms.

This role requires a strong technical baseline in mainframe application development, maintenance, and support across key technologies and utilities commonly used in enterprise environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and support applications within a mainframe environment
• Apply strong understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) across development and support activities
• Work with modern engineering practices, including AI-enabled development approaches and agent-based development methodologies
• Use contemporary development tools such as VS Code, GitHub, or equivalent platforms for collaboration and code management
• Design, develop, troubleshoot, and enhance mainframe-based solutions using established programming languages and utilities
• Work with data files, job scheduling components, and transaction processing systems within the mainframe ecosystem
• Support ongoing modernization and engineering efficiency initiatives where applicable

Required Skills and Experience

Core Technical Skills

Candidates should have hands-on experience with mainframe systems, including:

• COBOL, JCL, CICS
• DB2 for z/OS
• Assembler, PL/I
• Java, REXX
• Flat/sequential files, GDGs, VSAM
• Easytrieve
• Selcopy

Additional Required Capabilities

• Exposure to or practical experience with:
• Agent-based development
• AI-enabled engineering practices
• Modern tooling such as VS Code, GitHub, or similar platforms

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in enterprise-scale mainframe environments
• Familiarity with modern software engineering practices integrated into legacy/mainframe ecosystems
• Ability to work across traditional and modern development toolchains
