Job Description
Lead / Architect — ZENworks Endpoint Management
1. Role Summary
The ZENworks Lead / Architect is the design authority and senior technical leader for OpenText (Micro Focus) ZENworks across the client estate. The role owns the end-to-end architecture of the ZENworks management zone — primary and satellite server topology, content distribution, database, and agent strategy — and is accountable for the platform’s stability, security posture, and lifecycle.
Operating at G11, the role combines deep hands-on ZENworks expertise with technical leadership: setting standards and governance, leading upgrade and transformation programmes, mentoring engineers on the platform, and acting as the final technical escalation point for major incidents. The architect also engages directly with client stakeholders and supports solutioning and modernization roadmaps, including transitions from ZENworks to modern UEM platforms where required.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Architecture & design: Own the design of the ZENworks zone — primary/satellite server topology, content replication, closest-server rules, database backend (MS SQL / Oracle / PostgreSQL), certificate authority, and user sources (eDirectory / Active Directory).
- Platform lifecycle: Define and execute the ZENworks upgrade and patch strategy (system updates, PRUs, agent versions), including capacity planning, performance tuning, and high-availability design.
- Service design — ZCM: Establish enterprise standards for software distribution (bundles), policies, imaging (Preboot Services / PXE, WIM/ZMG), remote management, patch management, asset inventory, endpoint security, and full disk encryption.
- Transformation & modernization: Lead migration and modernization programmes — ZENworks version migrations, consolidation of zones, and assessed transitions from ZENworks to Microsoft Intune / SCCM where the account roadmap requires.
- Governance & standards: Define configuration baselines, security hardening, change governance, and operational runbooks; ensure alignment to client compliance frameworks and audit requirements.
- Technical leadership: Set technical direction for the ZENworks workstream, provide design guidance and peer review, and act as the senior technical reference for engineers working on the estate.
- Escalation authority: Act as the final L3/L4 escalation point for major incidents and complex problems; drive root-cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.
- Automation & reporting: Drive automation using zman CLI, ZENworks Web Services / REST API, PowerShell, and shell scripting; design operational and compliance reporting via ZENworks Reporting (Jaspersoft) and BI dashboards.
- Stakeholder engagement: Partner with client architects, security, and identity teams; present designs, roadmaps, and risk positions to senior stakeholders and delivery leadership.
- Solutioning support: Contribute to presales and solutioning — effort estimation, staffing models, RACI, and technical proposals for ZENworks and broader endpoint management engagements.
3. Required Technical Skills
- Deep, hands-on expertise across OpenText / Micro Focus ZENworks Configuration Management — bundles, policies, software distribution, imaging, and remote management.
- Strong command of ZENworks zone architecture — primary & satellite servers, content replication, closest-server rules, zones, and system updates.
- Experience with ZENworks Patch Management, Asset Management, Endpoint Security Management, and Full Disk Encryption.
- Proficiency with ZENworks Control Center (ZCC), the zman and zac command-line tools, and the ZENworks agent (ZAA) deployment and troubleshooting.
- Database administration awareness for ZENworks backends — MS SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL — including backup, restore, and performance considerations.
- Linux (SLES) and Windows Server administration for ZENworks primary servers, plus PKI/certificate management within the zone.
- User-source integration with Microsoft Active Directory and NetIQ eDirectory; LDAP concepts.
- Scripting and automation — PowerShell, Bash, and ZENworks APIs / zman — for large-scale operations and reporting.
- Mature ITSM practice (ServiceNow preferred) across incident, problem, change, and release, with architecture-level governance.
4. Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Experience designing and delivering ZENworks-to-Intune / SCCM modernization programmes.
- Working knowledge of a second endpoint platform — Microsoft Intune, SCCM/ConfigMgr, or BigFix — for hybrid estates.
- Exposure to ZENworks Mobile / UEM and macOS management.
- Familiarity with compliance and security frameworks (ISO 27001, CIS Benchmarks, NIST) applied to managed endpoints.
5. Qualifications & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field — or equivalent practical experience.
- OpenText / Micro Focus ZENworks certification (e.g., Certified ZENworks Administrator) — strongly preferred.
- One or more complementary credentials valued: Microsoft MD-102 / SC-300, ITIL v4, or relevant Linux (SUSE / Red Hat) certification.
6. Behavioural & Leadership Competencies
- Authoritative technical communicator, able to present designs and risk positions to senior client and delivery stakeholders.
- Strong technical leadership and mentoring — sets technical direction and raises the bar on engineering quality across the estate.
- Decisive under pressure — owns major-incident technical leadership and drives issues to permanent resolution.
- Strategic and pragmatic — balances platform stability with modernization and cost-to-serve objectives.
